Here are answers to some commonly asked questions:
What do I need to do before our first appointment?
Please complete the paperwork for new clients ahead of time. Be thinking about any questions you have, and write them down to make sure they are addressed during our session. Then just take a deep breath and repeat to yourself the words calm and relaxing.
What will happen at my first appointment?
This will be a chance for us to meet each other and gather information. My goal will be to get to know you and begin learning about your story. I will be asking you some questions (What has brought you to seek out counseling?) and answering questions you have. Your role will be to tell your story as openly as you can and to determine if I am a good fit for you. Towards the end of the first appointment we will discuss how often we want to work together and schedule a follow up appointment.
What if you are not a good fit for me?
Not every counselor-client combination is right. If we are not a good match, I won’t take it personally, and I’ll do everything I can to help you find a mental health counselor who is a better match for you.
What's special about your practice?
I'm not your average behavioral health provider. I am warm, relatable, and welcoming. I have a good sense of humor. I am very human and have flaws. Together we will take time to understand where you have been, what has and hasn't worked for you in the past, and how those things affect you now. Your history is important only to the extent that it influences your present behavior. My clinical practice is ultimately focused on your willingness for healing, resourcefulness for growth, courage for change, respect for learning, opportunities for insight, and imagination.
What takes place in future sessions?
After the first appointment, we will begin to have more focused conversations specifically attending to those areas most important to you. I encourage clients to learn all that they can about the areas that we are working on. I have many resources that I draw from in order to support you. Some of these tools include art therapy, hypnotherapy, recommending films, books, and articles.
How often will I need to see you?
We will decide together what makes sense for you. We may meet every week, every other week, or once a month. And, we may meet for a few months, a full year, or longer, depending upon your needs. Some clients schedule "maintenance sessions" once a year to stay dedicated to their progress.
How do I get started?
The best way to get started is to call me today! I look forward to working with you!
